Advocacy journalism | Suan and Donovan find backers

New York | Among a gaggle of short essays in which Sports Illustrated writers tout candidates for the magazine’s annual Sportsman of the Year award, two support soccer players. Grant Wahl writes to recommend Israel’s and Bnei Sakhnin’s Abas Suan (see 15 Apr 05), who has used “his newfound stature in Israel’s Arab and Jewish communities to voice the concerns of the Arab community while stressing, above all, that coexistence is a worthy and achievable goal.” Wahl relates Suan’s words and deeds to the social statements of Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith and John Carlos.

George Dohrmann backs Landon Donovan of Los Angeles Galaxy and the United States for helping to quell a labor dispute between U.S. players and the domestic soccer federation and for his loyalty to Major League Soccer.
