Portland, Oregon | Who says that women’s football can’t put butts in the seats? Five thousand tickets to the University of Portland–Notre Dame NCAA Division I women’s soccer quarterfinal sold out in six minutes on Monday. “They’ve officially achieved rock star status ,” said University of Portland athletic director Larry Williams. The demand for seats to Friday’s contest between the No. 1–ranked Pilots and No. 5 Fighting Irish froze the website of the online ticket seller and prompted calls to move the match from the school’s Merlo Field to 20,000-capacity PGE Park. NCAA regulations, however, mandate that the host conduct the match where it has played at least half its regular-season games.
The winner of the quarterfinal advances to the NCAA College Cup in College Station, Texas, from Dec 2–4. Portland features senior striker Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia, who at 22 has amassed 71 caps for Canada and 108 goals for Portland , having passed Tiffeny Milbrett earlier this season. With one more goal, Sinclair will best the NCAA single-season record of 37.
