Remember the Falklands | English chants reference old hostilities

Geneva | A diplomatic thaw? While the atmosphere at Sunday’s Argentina–England friendly at Stade de Gení¨ve perhaps lacked the requisite hostility, “[t]he latest encounter featured punches on the terraces, songs about the Falkland Islands, jibes regarding players’ sexuality and general churlishness.” Some England supporters were heard chanting standard nationalistic ditties such as “You’ll never take the Falklands [1]” and “What’s it like to lose a war?”

Yet reports suggest that the supporters were herded like livestock before and after the fixture, creating speculation that Switzerland needs more work on its security plan [2] before co-hosting the 2008 European Championships.
