Jerusalem | The first soccer pitch in the West Bank , in the Arab village of Issawiya, East Jerusalem, opened today. Funded by the government of South Korea as a contribution to the Peres Center for Peace , the artificial surface will form part of the Peres Center’s “twinned” school concept, in which Palestinian and Israeli school children, ages 6 to 14, meet for sport and other extracurricular activities. More than 2,000 children participate. In Issawiya, the Korea-Issawiya Peace Stadium replaces a small asphalt court on which Palestinian children had played. “Now we can play on a real field like professional soccer players,” said Majid Mahmoud, a Palestinian participant.
