London | Having nipped rivals Tottenham Hotspur for a final Champions League spot on 7 May—on the same day they were honoring their Highbury ground of 93 years—Arsenal Football Club had reason to feel elation and melancholy. True, their last season at the north London stadium has seen their greatest achievements in Europe. They face Barcelona on Wednesday, May 17, with the winner at the Stade de France to lift the European Cup.
To acknowledge the end of this landmark—although the east façade will be preserved as part of a condominium conversion—we offer a Flash slide show , the result of a recent visit. Many touring the stadium this year must have felt something of what Arsí¨ne Wenger said before the final home match against Wigan Athletic: “[W]hen you walk out, there is no way back . It will be destroyed.”
