News of import | Times of London plans to splash footie in U.S.

London | An American edition of the Times of London—for distribution in New York and Washington—will try to capitalize on “unsatisfied demand ” for soccer coverage, especially during the World Cup finals. The staid London daily, owned by the Rupert Murdoch–controlled News Corporation, is responding to trends in Internet traffic that show close to 40 percent of visitors from the USA. The same numbers hold true for another prominent London broadsheet, The Guardian, which produces a weekly edition for readers abroad.
Times editor Robert Thomson said the new product would feature soccer on the front page during the World Cup, with Times number-crunchers rooting for the U.S. team’s success to boost sales. More broadly, Thomson notes a demand for international news going unsatisfied. “You’ve got China and India on the rise, Japan coming back, Europe a fascinating story, and yet fewer American journalists in the field than perhaps at any time in history.”
