Warri, Nigeria | Perpetua Nkwocha, who plays club football in China, lifted the Super Falcons past Ghana in the African Women’s Championship final on Nov 11, scoring her seventh goal of the tournament. After the goal in the 14th minute, Nkwocha, according to the Confederation Africaine de Football account, “ripped her jersey open to reveal ‘I love you Jesus,’ written boldly on her inner vest.” Ghana and Nigeria qualify for the 2007 Women’s World Cup. After receiving the award, Blatter said his most poignant moment as FIFA boss came when handing footballs to children orphaned by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami: “The way they embraced the ball was special. That moment, the unrivalled joy, will always remain with me.” (informa.com, 11 Nov 06)

Referees | Women have so much to offer, despite Newell’s rant [12]
Luton Town manager Mike Newell‘s blast at assistant referee Amy Rayner following a 2–3 loss to Queen’s Park Rangers—“This is Championship football not parks stuff” formed part of Newell’s message—draws scorn from Sue Mott. Refereeing requires fitness and competence, she writes: “No one said anything about gonads.” (Telegraph, 14 Nov 06)
