That is horrible. I live and coach in Kentucky, and I'm devastated to hear what these kids had to go through.

I'm glad Brownsville is finally getting some long-overdo recognition—especially Porter. You can teach across the nation and not find students like ours. If there's one thing that can be said about them is that they have heart. It comes across in everything they do, from playing soccer to writing stories. Just ask Briones and Casares. They can tell you all about it.

All I can say is that I love Brownsville, and I love what you all have done with the best school there—Porter High School, of course. I am so proud of you all and congratulations! Keep up the great work.

As principal of Porter High School that magical year, I can only say, thank you for this wonderful story. The racial slurs and posters were beyond anything that I had ever encountered in my 40+ years of life. The referees even addressed us (team, coaches, administration) in Spanish. I had to remind them, angrily, that Brownsville Porter High School was on this side of the river. The official simply walked away. I will never forget that day. I told the kids that I'd write a book about that soccer season some day. Your article just inspired me to start. Thank you once again.
