Lost generation?

Fallout from England’s last-minute slip against Croatia on Nov 21 continues to be felt in the Times’s microsite, damningly labeled “The Lost Generation.” Writers examine cultures for youth football in Brazil and the Netherlands. These are compared favorably to the setup in England, which is green with envy. “We have special eyes,” says Peter Jeltema of FC Groningen in Holland. KNVB, the Dutch football association, describes the role of youth coach as “constructing basic game forms to compensate the negative influences of modern society.” The idea is that kids’ football should not be adult football in miniature.

Such moments in the spin of a ball make us sit up with delight, returning hope to the hopeless and faith to the faithless, bringing back memories of our fathers, our childhoods, or simply other such nanoseconds we have experienced. (Marcela Mora y Araujo, Guardian Unlimited, 6 Jul 07)
